There are few challenges left for Toyota’s mighty Hilux, a car that has toughed it out in the world’s most extreme environments for decades and which only last year made history by conquering the Arctic to become the first car to drive to the Magnetic North Pole. If those achievements alone didn’t leave the competition reeling, they are about to suffer another high-powered blow.

The Commercial Vehicle Show marks the debut of a new Hilux version that is set to become the most powerful production pick-up model on the UK market. With numbers limited to just 500 units, it also promises to be one of the most sought-after, too.

It is equipped with the 3.0-litre D-4D engine that already features in the Hilux Invincible, but thanks to a Toyota Motorsport diesel engine performance kit, maximum output is increased to a massive 194bhp (197 DIN hp). This slashes the nought to 62mph acceleration time from 13.0 to 10.5 seconds (11.4 seconds for automatic versions).

There is an even greater hike in torque performance, with a maximum 430Nm (up from 343Nm) sustained all the way from 1,600 to 3,200rpm.

Hilux is styled to reflect its pre-eminent position in the pick-up market, with dedicated 15-inch alloy wheels and stainless steel mesh grille. The cabin is finished in a special two-tone grey leather, with heated front seats.

Following its debut at the CV Show at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham on 15 April, the new range-topping Hilux will go on sale in the UK in the summer. Prices and full specification details will be announced nearer the on sale date.

The iconic Pirelli name is set to make a return to the Golf GTI range exactly 25 years after the original made its debut as the new Volkswagen Golf GTI Pirelli is launched in the UK.

Originally introduced in May 1983 the GTI Pirelli was based on the MkI Golf and featured the distinctive Pirelli ‘P’ alloy wheels. The vehicle proved to be an instant hit with its planned production run of just 10,500 vehicles selling out within six-months.

For 2008 the GTI Pirelli returns to the UK. Based on the MkV GTI bodyshell the new vehicle features uprated dynamics and aesthetics to distinguish it from the standard car.

At its heart is an enhanced version of the 2.0-litre T-FSI engine with its output raised from the standard 200 PS to 230 PS. Drive is channelled through a choice of six-speed manual or the twin-clutch DSG gearbox. The new GTI Pirelli reduces the standard car’s 0-62 mph time of 7.2 seconds to 6.8 seconds while the top speed rises from 146 mph to 152 mph.

As with the original GTI Pirelli the new car features a set of unique alloy wheels. The modest 13-inch wheels fitted to the 1983 car have evolved into a set of five-spoke 18-inch versions fitted, appropriately, with a set of 225/40 R18 Pirelli P-Zero tyres. Body-coloured elements including the front splitter, side skirts and rear bumper are complimented by a set of smoked rear light lenses and tinted rear windows. A unique Pirelli badge mounted on the bootlid further distinguishes the new car which will be available in a choice of three colours – reflex silver, diamond black and blue graphite.

The Pirelli theme continues to the vehicle’s interior which features unique half-leather sports seats with tyre-tread imprints set into the seat base and back. Yellow stitching contrasts against the black leather of the seats, sports steering wheel and handbrake.

Despite the focused nature of the vehicle the standard specification remains high. A total of six airbags, 2Zone electronic climate control, a CD stereo system and Electronic Stabilisation Programme (ESP) are all fitted as standard.

The new Golf GTI Pirelli is available to order now with the first vehicles set to arrive in the country in June. Prices will start at £22,555 on-the-road for the three-door model equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox, rising to £24,385 for the five door model fitted with a six-speed DSG gearbox.

For those really serious about their driving, the famous supercar-slaying R500 moniker is back with the arrival of the all-new Caterham Seven Superlight R500.

The latest model from the British sportscar manufacturer takes the minimalist, lightweight Seven philosophy to a new level with more power, sharper handling and for those venturing on track the option of launch control and the Caterham Motorsport engineered sequential gearbox.

Weighing just 506kg and producing 263bhp, R500 is the most potent race-tuned production Seven yet.

The Series 3 chassis flagship model blasts out 520bhp-per-tonne and is capable of propelling itself from 0-60mph in 2.88 seconds, delivering a pure adrenalin fix for those committed enough to strap themselves into the Kevlar race seats.

The original R500 was legendary, with the old Rover K-series powered machine rewriting performance records for 0-60mph and 0-100-0mph times. This new variant has been equipped to supersede its predecessor by embracing the very latest in lightweight engineering techniques and technology.

Lurking under the lightened bonnet is the all-alloy 2.0 litre Ford Duratec engine. Fed by its roller barrel throttle bodies, the normally aspirated, four-cylinder mill is tuned by Caterham Powertrain (CPT) to unleash a monster; 263bhp with a heaving 177 lb-ft of torque transmitted to the rear wheels. The relentless acceleration is transmitted through each ratio by either the standard 6-speed gearbox or the optional Caterham Motorsport engineered sequential transmission.

To help reign in such extreme performance are race-developed Avon CR500 tyres and a suspension set-up that includes weight saving aero wishbones and fully adjustable dampers. Bringing things ferociously to a halt are four-piston calipers clamping on vented discs at the front and lightweight twin piston rear calipers.

Performance upgrades for the R500 aimed squarely at the track day market include a sequential transmission, launch control, a gulping Carbon Induction Airbox and Eibach Springs and dampers derived from the Caterham C400 race series.

The R500 isn’t just about big performance statistics though; refinements and Seven firsts feature throughout and help distinguish it from its stablemates.

In true Colin Chapman spirit, engineers sought to add lightness to the chassis in order to improve the overall performance.

To shed a massive 9kg from the already featherlight chassis utilised by the R400, Caterham left no bolt unscrewed - more carbon and Kevlar feature than previously, thinner body panels have been utilised right through to aluminium rear light housings.

Discreet exterior styling tweaks carried over from the flagship CSR models offer both form and function - the carbon winglets increasing downforce and the cat’s tongue grill aiding cooling and aerodynamics. A carbon leather boot cover and clear rear lights are also new.

Housed within the revised chassis is keyless ignition, a quick-release Momo steering wheel with integrated indicator switches and an innovative dashboard featuring flush fitted switchgear, ACES sequential gear change lights and a new Stack display with scrolling text. The carbon dash is also finished with a detailed engraved plaque to show each car’s number.

On sale immediately, the factory built Superlight R500 starts at £36,995,

Long established as the face of the marque, Vauxhall’s Griffin will be given a new look for 2008. The new incarnation follows the rapid progress Vauxhall has made in vehicle design and overall brand perception in recent years, underpinned by the success of both Astra and Corsa models.

Displaying a more dynamic and contemporary look, the new Griffin will make its first appearance on the new Insignia, which will debut at the British International Motor Show in July. It will then appear progressively on every all-new Vauxhall launched in the future.

Bill Parfitt, Vauxhall’s Managing Director, said that the new-look Griffin represented far more than just a badge re-design: “While the new-look Griffin pays homage to our 100 year-plus manufacturing heritage in the UK, it also encapsulates Vauxhall’s fresh design philosophy, first showcased in the current Astra, and set to continue with Insignia.

“This recent evolution of the brand has resulted in Vauxhall’s incredible sales success over the last three years. Its retail share in the UK has increased significantly, while the manufacturing plants in Luton and Ellesmere Port produced in excess of 220,000 vehicles, with 59 per cent going for export, and the remainder making an important contribution to domestic sales.”

First public airing of the new Griffin will be later this summer, on Vauxhall’s Griffin House HQ in Luton. Retailers’ corporate identity will begin the change of the new Griffin in August 2008.

Laguna GT, which is powered by two new engines to the range, places the accent on enjoyment and efficiency to deliver outstanding on-road performance with the four-wheel steering technology. With quality an overriding concern throughout its design and production, New Laguna ensures a reassuring ride for all occupants thanks to its class-leading active and passive safety and a raft of practical features. Meanwhile, the GT’s stylish looks reinforce its top-of-the-range positioning for Laguna in terms of technology and powerplants. Available in Hatch and Sport Tourer, Laguna GT goes on sale in the UK from 9 May.

Four-wheel steering for an exceptional drive
The Active Drive chassis with four-wheel steering brings many benefits, starting with improved manoeuvrability, sharpened dynamic response, and unrivalled steering precision giving the driver truly intuitive control over the cornering line, achieving new heights in driveability and active safety. In town and on country roads, the car is easy to drive: highly manoeuvrable and precise. Laguna GT corners with very little body roll and a precise line is achieved with small steering inputs. The Active Drive chassis with four-wheel steering also excels in active safety, both under difficult braking conditions (with a good control over asymmetrical grip and with the ESP matched to a more sporting driving style), and during avoidance manoeuvres at speed (’elk’ test).

Four-wheel steering systems of the 1980s were essentially mechanical, with the front and rear wheels linked and pre-determined angles aimed at making up for shortcomings in the vehicle’s handling (e.g. a tendency to understeer). Such systems were gradually superseded by the advent of ESP. Meanwhile, towards the end of the 1990s, manufacturers such as Nissan were beginning to develop solutions based on electrically- and even hydraulically-operated actuators to take the dynamic performance of their vehicles forward. Electronic control of rear wheel steering has enabled handling to be fine-tuned even further, notably in the case of rear-wheel drive vehicles.

The Active Drive system builds on this approach by ensuring a more dynamic and more reactive response to make the most of the inherent qualities of Laguna GT’s chassis and consequently deliver even greater driving enjoyment. In addition to the complex modelling of the vehicle’s handling, real-time response to the driver’s instructions (every 10 milliseconds) and its ability to adapt to different conditions, Laguna GT’s Active Drive four-wheel steering system means that active safety systems are only required as a very last resort, which means drivers benefit from more efficient and even more reassuring reactions when faced with an unexpected hazard.

Impressive low-speed manoeuvrability
The Active Drive chassis with four-wheel steering makes Laguna GT exceptionally easy to handle in town and agile on winding roads. At speeds of less than 38mph, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to the front wheels, up to an angle of 3.5°. This brings two advantages: a smaller turning circle, for easy manoeuvring; and reduced steering wheel input required thanks to the more direct, specially calibrated steering.

With four-wheel steering on the Active Drive chassis, Laguna GT has a 10 per cent smaller turning circle than with two-wheel steering: 10.80 metres, incredibly the same as Clio, instead of 12.05m. Enhanced manoeuvrability is especially noticeable in tight parking situations.

With front and rear wheels turning in opposite directions, the car effectively pivots, which means smaller steering angles are needed for the same turning effect. Whereas it takes a 16° steering wheel angle to produce a 1° turn in the front wheels on New Laguna, it takes just 13.5° with the Active Drive chassis. And this drops to 12° when the rear wheels are turned at the maximum 3.5° angle in the opposite direction to the front wheels. Because the steering is more direct, with less need for large steering wheel angles, the impression of manoeuvrability and agility is greatly enhanced. For any given bend, the driver will need less input on the steering wheel, making for more effective avoidance.

Ultra-precise steering control
From 38mph, the emphasis is on steering precision. The rear wheels turn simultaneously in the same direction as the front wheels, to enhance stability. The Active Drive system with four-wheel steering counters the centrifugal force that tends to push the rear end outwards round bends, and thus raises the safe cornering speed. The rear axle is set on the ideal trajectory, with a rear-wheel angle of less than 2° in most situations, for stability. The Active Drive chassis with four-wheel steering enhances dynamic handling, with a reassuring response for outstanding driving pleasure.

Unparalleled active safety
The Active Drive chassis with four-wheel steering also improves safety for heightened reassurance during avoidance manoeuvres. In an emergency situation, the rear-wheel angle can rise to 3.5°. The involvement of the ESP system, specially configured for a more sporting driving style, is delayed, so that the manoeuvre can be performed both safely and more swiftly. ESP only deploys when necessary, and is applied gradually because it is synchronized with the rear-wheel turn action. Via the ESP/ABS unit, the four-wheel steering control unit also detects asymmetrical braking situations, such as on mixed surfaces, adapting the rear-wheel turn angle automatically to keep the car stable with no driver action required. This helps the driver keep control during critical situations, and ensures uninterrupted peace of mind during everyday driving conditions.

Dynamic control logic
The Active Drive chassis with four-wheel steering has been developed jointly by Renault and Renault Sport Technologies and implements electronic control of the vehicle dynamics. A sensor on the steering column sends steering wheel angle information via the CAN (controller area network) to the four-wheel steer control unit, located behind the rear axle. The four-wheel steer control unit also inputs vehicle speed from the ESP/ABS unit and tracks steering wheel angle information to detect sharp steering wheel movements symptomatic of a sporting driving style or avoidance situation. All these parameters are analysed to determine the required rear-wheel turn angle, which is implemented by means of an electric actuator on the rear axle. Dynamic vehicle behaviour is precisely modelled to set the ideal vehicle trajectory at each instant, on the basis of the driver’s input and the actual situation of the vehicle. The controller and electric actuator are supplied by Aisin, a Japanese equipment supplier reputed for its experience in four-wheel steering systems.

High-performance engines
The diesel version of Laguna GT is powered by a new 2.0 dCi engine, offering best-in-class performance, driveability and acoustics. In the GT, it provides peak power of 180hp at 3,750rpm. Peak torque of 400Nm is available from 2,000rpm, with a consistent build-up through to 5,000 rpm. A reduced-inertia variable-vane turbocharger enhances dynamic response at low revs to achieve excellent performance: 29.6 seconds for the 1,000m standing start, and 0 to 62mph in 8.5 seconds. This new unit is fitted with a particulate filter and an exhaust gas regeneration valve with enhanced cooling to maximise environmental protection: combined-cycle fuel consumption is just 43.4mpg, which translates into CO2 emissions of just 172g/km. With its ultra-fast glow plugs, the 180hp 2.0 dCi unit fires into action instantly the Start button is pressed, even in conditions of extreme cold (down to -23°C).

The petrol version of Laguna GT is powered by a turbo-charged two-litre 16-valve unit (205hp at 5,000rpm and 300Nm from 3,000rpm) derived from Renault Sport technology as featured on the Mégane Renaultsport, and specifically reworked for Laguna GT, to yield the best in performance, handling and driving pleasure. Laguna GT 205 accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 7.8 seconds and takes 28 seconds to cover 1,000 metres from standstill. Fuel consumption is 34.4mpg, with CO2 emissions of just 194g/km.

Distinctive GT styling
The car’s sporting character is underpinned by lateral air-intakes in the front bumper, a larger front grille and black background to the headlamps. Laguna GT sits on specific 225/45 Bridgestone Potenza tyres with new 18-inch ‘Celsium’ alloy wheels. Braking power is provided by larger 320mm diameter discs at the front and 300mm discs at the rear.

GT attributes run through to every last detail, such as the gloss black door mirrors and smoked rear lights. Laguna GT is available in four metallic colours; Mercury, Pearl Black, Venetian Red and a new exclusive GT colour, Malta Blue.

Sports interior
Externally visible on the ‘B’ pillar, the GT logo is also embossed on the light grey alcantara centre sections of the seats. As on all New Laguna versions, the interior design exudes comfort and quality for all occupants. Sports design details abound highlighting the GT version: special three-spoke leather sports steering wheel with grey stitching, drilled aluminium pedals, GT gearshift knob, sports front seats with increased lateral support and dark charcoal Riviera leather upholstery. Close attention has been paid to materials and finish, in keeping with the car’s commitment to pure motoring pleasure.

For 2008, the iconic HUMMER H2 features numerous changes that deliver a more luxurious, comfortable and refined interior, while retaining HUMMER’s legendary off-road abilities and ruggedness. An all-new powertrain combines a 6.2-litre V8 petrol engine and six-speed automatic transmission to deliver much improved efficiency, while state-of-the-art safety features are now standard.

In the UK, three HUMMER H2 models are available priced from £48,995 (on-the-road) with a choice of five-door SUV, with seating for up to seven people or SUT (double-cab pick-up) body styles.

All 2008 H2 models are distinguished from previous models by larger openings in the iconic, seven-slot grille and the lower grille (to accommodate the increased cooling air-flow demands of more powerful V8 engine) and the lower bumpers are painted silver, instead of black. Two new exterior metallic colours are available (Graystone and Solar Flare) expanding the customer choice to six colours, while the interior is available in Ebony or Sedona Red/Ebony with leather seat surfaces.

“The 2008 HUMMER H2 represents a major step in the evolution of this iconic vehicle,” comments Jonathan Nash, Managing Director HUMMER UK. “From performance to comfort to safety and overall refinement, the new H2 line-up delivers even more of what customers have come to expect from HUMMER. I’m sure that customers will be especially impressed with the new, more refined interior.”

All-new, luxury-appointed interior
While drivers will enjoy the 2008 H2’s improved performance on the road, they’ll appreciate the experience more – thanks to the all-new interior. This features a completely redesigned dashboard, new seats – including an optional third-row seat for two passengers– new door trim panels, new controls, new rear-seat heating/air conditioning system, new rear-seat overhead DVD entertainment system and a new premium audio system.

“The new interior delivers a more refined, more precise, premium feel,” enthuses Nash. “Everything from the flushness of the controls to the feel of the materials exudes craftsmanship, while the fine details, like the leather seat piping, create a consistent, up-market design style that is echoed across the entire HUMMER family.”

The new H2 seats present a more sculptured appearance and offer improved comfort. The top anchorage of the front seat belts is now mounted on the B-pillar rather than on the seats and this change enabled engineers to adopt an uncompromising approach to achieving optimum seat comfort.

Complementing the new seats are new door trim panels and throughout the cabin soft-touch materials and new, more tactile controls enhance the feeling of craftsmanship demonstrated by a new interior. Precision design ensures that the interior panel gaps are just one millimetre and an all-new instrument panel with a six-gauge instrument cluster features a more refined appearance.

The dashboard panel also features new vents that enhance heating or cooling comfort throughout the vehicle – particularly for the second-row and third-row seat occupants. The new centre stack houses the climate controls and a new premium BOSE audio and surround sound system.

Additional comfort and convenience features that are standard or optional (depending on model) include a new rear-seat overhead DVD entertainment system, a satellite navigation system, a rear-view camera system and heated windshield washer fluid. The 2008 H2 now comes with a remote starting system that enables the vehicle’s interior to be heated or cooled prior to driving.

Driving experience
The powerful heart of the 2008 H2 is an all-new, all-aluminium, small-block 6.2-litre V8 engine with performance and fuel efficiency-optimizing technologies including variable valve timing. Lighter and more powerful, the new V8 boasts a 20% power increase over the previous engine. It generates 393 ps of power at 5700 rpm and a massive 574 Nm of torque at 4300 rpm.

The new engine is mated to a new Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with two overdrive ratios that help deliver an excellent balance of performance and fuel economy. The six gears feature a wide ratio spread with a low 1st gear (4.02:1) for brisk take-off from standstill and high 5th (0.85:1) and 6th gear (0.66:1) for quite, refined and fuel-stretching higher speed cruising.

For a more responsive driving experience, the 6L80 transmission is equipped with HUMMER’s ‘tap up/tap down’ capability that allows the driver to manually select gears sequentially (one at a time), controlling upshifts and downshifts with buttons on the steering wheel.

The new powertrain combination helps the 2008 H2 deliver an additional 1700 lb (773 kg) of towing capacity – up from 6500 lb (2954 kg) to 8200 pounds (3727 kg). A host of additional powertrain revisions also contributes to the H2’s improved performance and efficiency. These revisions including: a larger-capacity cooling system, an electric engine cooling fan which reduces ‘drag’ on engine, releasing more horsepower, a regulated voltage control that maximises fuel economy (by charging electrical components only when necessary), a new LAN electrical architecture that’s more efficient and uses less electrical energy and a 3.73:1 rear axle ratio as standard.

On-road, the H2 driving experience is quieter and more refined, thanks to new, re-tuned engine air intake and exhaust systems. On- and off-road, enhanced performance is assured by a revised steering system that has a quicker ratio and improved on-centre feel with increased self-centring.

Off-road, the H2’s 4×4 system has even greater ability in keeping with its legendary status. The transfer case is stronger, the ‘crawl’ ratio is 39.7:1 – an improvement of about 20%, the transmission’s ‘tap-up / tap-down’ system provides more control on gradients and the new electronic traction control system is standard.

Upgraded Safety as Standard
Complementing the 2008 H2 line-up’s performance and comfort improvements are significant enhancements to the vehicle’s safety systems, which include several new standard features:

    * Roof rail-mounted full length curtain air bags with rollover sensing system
* Front seats safety belt pretensioners
* Electronic stability control system with rollover mitigation technology
* New traction control system
* Tire pressure monitoring system

Also new is an emergency brake assist (EBA) system – the first application of this technology on a full-size GM truck or SUV. This electronic system detects when a driver is braking unusually severely and delivers maximum brake pressure to help stop the vehicle more quickly and with more control. It is a standard feature on all 2008 H2 models.

An additional feature that contributes to a safer driving experience is the new Rear Vision System – a rear view camera that monitors the area behind the vehicle to ensure safe reversing. The camera’s image is shown on a drop-down mini-screen which slides out of the rear-view mirror. The RVS system is standard on Luxury models and available as an option on the Adventure (£850).

True to the soul of HUMMER
While the 2008 H2 is offered with a new powertrain and new interior, its foundations remain the same, true to the soul of HUMMER. The H2’s fully welded ladder-type chassis frame features a modular, three-piece design incorporating a number of hydroformed components. This design delivers outstanding strength, stiffness and dimensional accuracy.

To achieve its exceptional and legendary off-road performance – including travelling through 508 mm deep streams, climbing over 406-mm steps and rocks, powering up 60% gradients, coping with 40% slide slopes and paddling through deep sand or snow – the H2 engine delivers massive (574 Nm) torque via a six-speed transmission and heavy duty 4×4 drivetrain with 39.7:1 crawler ratio and lockable rear differential.

The H2 has short overhangs for radical approach and departure angles, and exceptional ground clearance for minimal grounding on trails. Standard 17-inch wheels, heavy-duty independent front suspension and a five-link rear suspension provide superior handling, carrying and towing capability. The solid rear axle ensures durable sure-footedness, particularly in tight, off-road situations. Also standard is extensive underbody protection for the engine and transmission components.

A new, four-channel anti-lock braking and traction control system (ABS/TCS) provides optimum control on slippery surfaces. In addition, the ABS is calibrated to detect and adjust its braking capabilities to rough off-road surfaces like gravel and potholes. The new TCS allows the driver to use a two-foot driving technique (one foot on the brake, the other on the throttle pedal), to achieve the best driving style for negotiating a steep, rocky trail. The TCS also includes the ability to gain traction through a single wheel. A self-levelling rear air spring suspension system is available for extreme off-road and towing requirements.

H2 SUT – maximum utility and fun
Like the HUMMER H2, the H2 SUT can carry passengers and cargo, but does so with a twist of extra versatility – a pick-up style open cargo bed enables convenient storage of larger items. When more cargo space is required, a 2440 x 1220 mm pick-up bed can be created by powering the rear window into the Midgate, and then folding forward both the Midgate and rear seat backrest. When four occupants are on board, the bulkhead at the rear of the SUT’s passenger compartment remains upright, still providing ample cargo-carrying capacity.

Practicality aside, the H2 SUT also offers an open, invigorating driving experience. At the push of a single button, the driver can lower all four side windows and the rear window. Using a separate switch, the standard sunroof can also be opened, giving SUT a truly open-air ambience.

Called Qashqai+2, the new model is seen by Nissan as the first Crossover for busy, active families and with the imminent arrival of the second generation Murano, helps to extend Nissan’s Crossover offering to three distinctive models. Sales in Europe will begin in October.

Qashqai+2 customers will be looking for a car which has the space, convenience and utility of a traditional MPV, but who want a more attractive, sophisticated design. Nissan’s research shows that customers of the existing Qashqai are clearly attracted to it by its design – three-quarters are new to Nissan – and this is a pattern that will continue with Qashqai+2. Those customers are not attracted to the existing people carriers with three rows. And at the same time, Nissan’s research shows that an increasing number of customers in this area of the market are not interested in ‘family’ SUVs, with a third row of seats. They are perceived as too big and too boxy for their needs.

It is against this background that Nissan’s European Product Planning team identified a pool of potential customers who are looking for a stylish yet practical family car. Qashqai+2 continues the Crossover theme so successfully pioneered by Qashqai, by sitting in between two well established segments of the market and drawing customers who aren’t quite satisfied by either of those traditional options.

The results of early Qashqai+2 customer clinics showed that potential customers perceived it as being more family orientated, offering more independence, being ideal for going on family holidays and offering more fun than traditional choices.

They also recognised its increased practicality, space and versatility, as well as being more attractive and elegant than its alternatives.

Where Qashqai generally attracts buyers who have no kids or just one kid, or whose kids have already left the nest, Qashqai+2 will offer the rational advantages of a practical family car, with elements such as stylish design, premium interior quality and an engaging driving experience to satisfy the more emotional side of the buying equation.

Like the multi award-winning original, Qashqai+2 has been designed and engineered in Europe and will be built at Nissan’s highly productive plant in Sunderland, in the UK.

In January this year, the plant – which produced a record 353,000 vehicles in 2007 – transferred production of Qashqai models built for export to Japan to the company’s Kyushu plant in Japan to free extra production capacity for Europe. Furthermore, in June a third shift will be added to meet demand for surging sales.

“The arrival of Qashqai+2 will broaden the appeal of the range still further, so the third shift at Sunderland is absolutely vital if we are to keep up with the high demand for the model,” says, Simon Thomas.

DESIGN & PACKAGING
Qashqai+2 shares clear family design DNA with the original, but is subtly different from virtually every angle. Created by designers at Nissan Design Europe in London’s Paddington, the new model is essentially identical to Qashqai from the A-Pillar forward… but everything else behind has been changed.

With a wheelbase extended by 135 mm – taking it to 2,765 mm – the overall length of Qashqai+2 has risen to 4,526 mm, an increase of 211 mm over the five-seat version.

To ensure there’s ample headroom in the third set of seats, the roofline has been lengthened and re-profiled at the rear of the vehicle, adding 38 mm to the overall height and taking it to 1,643 mm. Headroom in the front and middle row of seats has increased by 16 mm and 10 mm respectively, while knee room in the middle row has improved by 23 mm.

At the same time, both front and rear doors have been restyled: the window frames of the front door are squarer in line with the re-profiled roofline, while the rear pair are completely new – longer and also with squarer window frames.

Other styling changes include larger side windows at the rear of the vehicle to provide a light and airy environment for occupants of the third row of seats. Further differentiation between five and seven-seat versions is provided by a new tailgate with a deeper rear window and revised bumper profile at the rear and a sleek new grille, exclusive to Qashqai+2, at the front.

Another exterior feature found as standard on Qashqai+2 is a huge panoramic glass roof to give the same light, airy feeling that is so popular with customers on the existing Qashqai. The fixed roof is 140 mm longer than the equivalent sunroof offered on Qashqai and has a one-touch electric operated sunshade.

Additionally, Qashqai+2 has roof rails as standard adding a premium feel to its silhouette, while darkened privacy glass for all windows behind the front doors is standard on all versions.

Styling aside, the nature of the new model means much of the engineering and development work has been concentrated on the rear of the car where the aim has been to make it as flexible, practical and convenient as possible for passengers.

Lengthening the rear doors has improved ingress to the passenger compartment while access to the rearmost pair of seats is further eased by revisions to the middle bench. As well as having a folding backrest, the bench now slides fore and aft to provide walk-in access to the back row.

As well as moving through a total of 100 mm, the middle bench seat now has a three way folding operation on a 40/20/40 split for added modularity. The five-seat version splits on a 60/40 basis. The backrest also reclines and has no fewer than nine adjustment positions over a range from 10 deg to 25 deg of inclination.

The centre ‘20’ portion doubles as a seat or a generously wide multi-function armrest. When used as an armrest, as well as providing a greater feeling of spaciousness for those in the third row, the seat back incorporates two cupholders and a lidded storage box large enough to hold personal music players, games consoles and CDs. It also has an integrated power outlet. When upright, the box becomes a storage recess for those in the rearmost seats.

THREE ROW VERSATILITY
The third row of seats is ingeniously practical. Designed for children or as occasional seats for small adults up to about 1.6m tall, the angle of the backrest has seven adjustment settings and can, of course, be folded completely flat to increase luggage space. The seats split on a 50/50 basis and each can be folded away simply by pulling on a single strap: there is no need to remove head restraints first.

The addition of a third row of seats allows families the option of transforming their Qashqai+2 into a spacious family car into the ‘kids bus’, for those busy days out playing sport or weekends away which can be a logistical nightmare for parents, worried about whether the family, kids and their friends, as well as all their baggage will fit.

When folded away, there’s a large flat loading area left behind which provides almost 500 litres of potential luggage capacity, an increase of 90 litres over Qashqai. The new rear door and revised interior panels mean the loading height has been reduced by 13 mm to 770 mm while, at 1186 mm, the opening width is a remarkable 224 mm wider.

Unlike many seven-seat vehicles, Qashqai+2 has a full depth roller-blind style tonneau cover. With the rearmost seats folded it can be used conventionally but if the third set of seats are to be occupied, it can be removed and stowed in a special compartment under the boot floor. Like the extra pair of seats, therefore, the tonneau can remain in the vehicle at all times.

The lid of the underfloor stowage area, meanwhile, can also double as a cargo divider so fragile shopping – eggs or bottles for example – can be safely loaded where it won’t be damaged by heavier items. The load area is set off by a stylish stainless steel kick plate which offers protection to the leading edge of the boot floor when loading heavy items.

RIDE & HANDLING
Mechanically, Qashqai+2 follows the lead set by the original model. That means a stretched version of Nissan’s C-platform featuring strut-type front suspension with combined coil-over-strut assemblies and a forward lower link. The suspension assembly is mounted on a subframe which is attached to the body via compliant rubber bushes to isolate road noise and vibration from the platform, improving both refinement and ride comfort. A front anti-roll bar is attached directly to the strut assembly for more effective control of body roll under cornering.

A fully independent multi-link rear suspension has been used for precise handling and high-speed stability. Attached to the vehicle via a rigid rear subframe to keep unwanted noise and vibrations to a minimum, the compact assembly features an aluminium rear upper link to reduce weight: the saving is in the region of 4 kg.

The extra length and equipment found in Qashqai+2 has raised the overall weight of the vehicle by approximately 100 kg. Suspension settings have been revised to take account of the extra weight, while steering assistance – all Qashqai models use electric power steering – has also been retuned.

ALL-MODE SAFETY
Two versions of the chassis are available, offering the choice of front-wheel drive or sophisticated ALL-MODE four-wheel drive.

Developed by Nissan, the ALL-MODE system – which is available on 2.0-litre diesel and petrol models – allows secure and relaxed driving with advanced electronics taking care of all traction needs, ensuring that Qashqai+2 has grip at all times no matter how severe the conditions. Unlike some other automatic four-wheel drive systems, ALL-MODE uses advanced electronics rather than hydraulic pumps to ensure drive is transferred between wheels and axles the instant the need arises.

Under normal conditions, Qashqai+2 operates in front-wheel drive which reduces energy losses and saves on fuel. The instant wheel slippage is detected however, a centre clutch in the rear final drive is electronically activated and drive is correctly apportioned between front and rear axles.

The system has three modes, selected via a switch on the centre console. In two-wheel drive mode, the system is permanently set in front-wheel drive, ideal for fine weather on-road use. When the Lock setting is pushed, however, the system switches to permanent four-wheel drive mode with drive split 57:43 front to rear.

The most practical mode, however, is ‘select-and-forget’ Auto, in which the system is left to its own devices. Sensors linking the engine’s ECU with the four-wheel drive and ABS controller constantly monitor wheel slippage and automatically send signals to the electromagnetic centre clutch mounted just ahead of the rear axle to apportion torque correctly.

Left in Auto, the system will automatically compensate for unexpected slippery conditions on-road, such as wet leaves in autumn, early morning winter ice or loose gravel at any time of the year.

ALL-MODE is inextricably linked to Bosch’s eighth generation Electronic Stability Programme (ESP). Using sensors linked to the brakes, steering, wheels and the body itself, ESP constantly monitors the way the car is being driven.

In its customer research, Nissan found clearly that existing Qashqai owners who have opted for the ALL-MODE versions enjoy the feeling of confidence and security that the discreet, unobtrusive all-wheel drive system gives them when driving in marginal conditions.

Given its family orientation, customers will appreciate the availability of ALL-MODE on Qashqai+2 thanks to the reassurance it will offer in almost all road conditions that the driver and occupants are likely to find themselves in.

From the steering angle and wheel speeds, ESP calculates what manoeuvres the driver intends to perform and from signals from the yaw-rate and lateral acceleration sensors ESP recognises whether the vehicle might skid off course. In an emergency ESP reacts swiftly, and by selectively applying the brakes at each wheel ESP ‘steers’ the vehicle in the desired direction.

Qashqai+2 has other electronic control systems, including cornering brake control (CBC) and enhanced understeer control (EUC) in which the system applies the brakes to all four wheels to reduce excessive understeer. Hydraulic fade compensation (HFC) prevents brake fade after a period of heavy brake usage.

The braking system is essentially unchanged from Qashqai, though the adoption of standard 17-inch alloy wheels on 2.0-litre versions has permitted the fitment of larger rear brakes.

THE RUNNING GEAR
Qashqai+2 offers a choice of two petrol and two diesel versions. The entry-level petrol is a lightweight all-aluminium unit displacing 1598 cc, developing 115 PS (84 kW) and 160 Nm of torque. It has four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing, multi-point port injection and vane-type continuous intake cam phasing.

Top of the petrol range is another all-aluminium 16-valve design, this one displacing 1997 cc and developing 140 PS (103 kW) and 200 Nm of torque. Some 90 per cent of that torque is available from 2000 rpm providing the accelerative ‘punch’ more usually expected in larger engines.

Almost as compact as the 1.6 engine, among its key design features is a notable reduction in internal friction. A mirror-like finishing technique is applied to the surfaces of the crankshaft pin journal and the cam lobe journal and to a new machining method that ensures truly circular bores is used: this procedure is common practice in the machining of bores of racing engines but is seldom used in volume production engines.

The entry-level diesel uses the most powerful version of Alliance partner Renault’s acclaimed 1.5 dCi (K9K) engine developing 106 PS (78 kW) and 240Nm of torque. A Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is also fitted as standard. Praised for its fuel efficiency and low noise, it features a flexible flywheel to filter out the effects of acyclic movements. Specifically developed to comply with Euro 4 legislation the engine has a lowered compression ratio (16:1) and a variable geometry, multi-blade turbocharger.

The 2.0 dCi is equipped with a Bosch piezoelectric-controlled injection system to develop 150 PS (110 kW) and 320 Nm of torque. Piezoelectric technology gives fast, very precise control allowing a ‘five squirt’ injection cycle: two pre-squirts, one main squirt and two post-squirts.

The pre-squirts improve engine acoustics by minimising the characteristic diesel clatter. The post-squirts sustain the main injection combustion, to burn off soot and thus bring down pollutant emissions before the exhaust gases have even left the combustion chamber.

Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) produces a controlled temperature rise in the combustion chamber to reduce pollutant emission levels (NOx) and thus enhance the engine’s overall environment performance. The 2.0-litre diesel engine is also equipped as standard with a DPF.

Transmission options include a five-speed manual (1.6-litre petrol), six-speed manual (2.0 petrol and both diesels), six-speed automatic (4WD 2.0 dCi) and, uniquely in its class, a highly efficient CVT transmission option on the 4WD 2.0-litre petrol offering a choice between ‘stepless’ changes or a manual over-ride with six fixed ratios.

EQUIPMENT
Following the lead set by Qashqai, the new family version is available in three different trim and equipment versions – the now familiar Visia, Acenta and Tekna levels.

Depending on the version, standard equipment includes automatic lighting, automatic wipers, speed sensitive door locking, cruise control, privacy glass, electric windows, parking sensors, 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels and Nissan’s Intelligent Key. Manual or automatic air conditioning incorporates mild flow ventilation while to provide sufficient airflow for the rearmost passengers, a larger compressor is fitted.

Subtle interior mood lighting is available, while all models benefit from ample storage opportunities, including an under seat drawer, large glovebox and door pockets. Also standard are the full-length panoramic glass roof and roof rails.

All audio systems – a single disc CD/radio, an in-dash six disc changer/radio or a full navigation system with in-dash six disc CD autochanger – incorporate Bluetooth hands-free mobile phone integration allowing remote operation of the phone and caller ID display. The audio system also has a standard auxiliary input connection for MP3 players and other external audio devices.

Qashqai+2 is equipped with six airbags (front, side and curtain), seat belt pretensioners in the front and active headrests.

Popular options include embossed leather trim and the advanced satellite navigation system incorporating a seven-inch full colour display (which doubles as the display for the rear parking camera) and voice recognition.

“Qashqai+2 adds a new dimension to the range and makes it even more versatile than the original. It will appeal not just to larger families, but also to anyone who appreciates its distinctive looks and commanding seating position as well as its extra space and flexibility,” says Pierre Loing, Vice President, Product Planning, Nissan Europe.

“While some sales will come from current or potential Qashqai owners, we are confident the majority will be conquest sales from owners currently stuck with a conventional compact MPV: they appreciate the style and dynamism of the original Qashqai but need the extra seats of an MPV… no matter how dull it might be. With Qashqai+2 they can now have the best of both worlds.”

The Touareg range is set to benefit from the introduction of a revised 3.0-litre V6 TDI common rail diesel engine which promises to deliver greater refinement and a useful boost in power while returning higher fuel economy and emitting less CO2.

The 3.0-litre diesel engine fitted to the Touareg has enjoyed sustained popularity with UK buyers, accounting for 68 per cent of all sales of the vehicle. The new common rail engine draws on the virtues of the outgoing unit yet raises the power output by 15 PS to a total of 240 PS and the available torque from 369 lbs ft to 406 lbs ft. The result is a significant gain in performance, with the time taken to accelerate from 0 to 62 mph dropping from 9.2 to 8.3 seconds. Despite these gains, CO2 output falls from 278 g/km to 262 g/km. The 3.0-litre V6 engine is linked to a six speed tiptronic gearbox and four-wheel drive.

The new Euro 5 compliant engine also features a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) in the exhaust system, and joins the existing 2.5-litre TDI and 5.0-litre V10 TDI diesel and 3.6-litre V6 petrol engines in the Touareg range.

The new engine will be available in three trim levels – Touareg, SE and Altitude – all of which come with a comprehensive list of standard equipment. Advanced 4XMOTION all-wheel-drive linked to an Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), hill start and descent assist, air conditioning and six airbags are all fitted as standard.

Prices for the new Touareg 3.0-litre V6 TDI start at £33,465 RRP on the road, rising to £36,865 for the SE model and £39,665 for the range-topping Altitude trim level.

    * New limited edition TSIII joins the Coupe range, priced at £19,595
* Styling enhancements and special colours
* New sports suspension, quilted leather seats and anthracite finish alloys

The iconic Hyundai Coupe has always been a real head turner. Now it is joined in the showroom this month by a limited edition model, called the TSIII. This promises to really strain the neck muscles of passers-by with extra styling enhancements and exclusive colour options.

Four paint colour options of Stone Black, Rose Red, Crystal White or Carbon Grey are available. Crystal White and Rose Red have never been offered on the Coupe before and are exclusively available on the TSIII in very limited numbers.

To complement and contrast with these colours, the 17” alloy wheels have a special anthracite finish.

At the rear the quad exhaust pipes deliver a sportier engine note, while a larger boot spoiler with integral brake light gives the TSIII a more purposeful look.

Inside the cabin, TSIII features quilted leather sports seats offering more support and comfort to enhance the driving experience. Matching quilted door trims complete the look. Elsewhere in the interior, chrome sill guards with a TSIII logo, metal trimmed pedals and footrest add to the sporty feel of the cabin. Air conditioning with climate control, heated front seats and cruise control all come as standard on the TSIII, along with iPod compatible stereo and metal-look finishes on the steering wheel, centre console and air vents.

It’s not just the looks that have been enhanced. To increase road holding the TSIII comes with Eibach sport springs which also give the Coupe a lower, more aggressive stance.

To keep the car affordable and insurable the engine and transmission remain unchanged in the limited edition, offering a mix of affordability and outright performance. The TSIII is powered by a 2.0 litre 4-cylinder 16-valve DOHC petrol engine, developing 141 bhp. It can crack the 0-62 mph sprint in just 9.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 129 mph.

The Coupe TSIII represents outstanding value for money with a price of just £1,575 over the current Coupe SIII 2.0. The TSIII is in showrooms now for a short period and numbers are strictly limited. The Coupe, as with all Hyundai cars, comes with the famous Hyundai unlimited mileage, Five Year Warranty package.

The most powerful Tiguan yet, equipped with a new 2.0-litre TDI 170 PS common rail diesel engine, has now been released for ordering. Combining greater torque than a Golf GTI with the efficiency, lower emissions and refinement you’d expect from a modern diesel, the Tiguan strikes a balance between performance and economy.

This new common rail engine is capable of developing a maximum of 258 lbs ft of torque via a six-speed manual gearbox. As with the rest of the Tiguan range the new engine will route drive through an advanced 4MOTION system which can divert up to 100 per cent of drive to any wheel depending on the traction available.

The increases in both power and torque do not come at the sacrifice of either economy or performance. The new engine is capable of returning 40.4 mpg on the combined cycle while emitting 185 g/km of CO2. As you’d expect from the most powerful Tiguan to date the new 2.0-litre TDI 170 PS also assures that it’s the fastest. The vehicle can accelerate from rest to 62 mph in 8.9 seconds before reaching a maximum speed of 125 mph.

As with the rest of the Tiguan range, the new model is equipped with a high level of standard equipment including six airbags, Electronic Stabilisation Programme (ESP), ‘Climatic’ semi-automatic air conditioning and the RCD 510 touchscreen entertainment system with six-disc CD autochanger.

The new engine will be available in either SE or Sport trim levels. Prices for the new 2.0-litre TDI 170 PS start at £22,670 for the SE, rising to £23,370 for the Sport model.

Today, 2nd April, the covers come off the most important new model in Spanish car maker SEAT’s recent history with the unveiling of the all-new Ibiza five-door supermini.

The newcomer’s dramatic debut, at the firm’s Martorell HQ near Barcelona, marks the start of a major product offensive from the ambitious Spanish brand which will, over the coming months, also see the debut of further Ibiza variants, as well as striking new saloon and estate contenders in the upper medium segment.

All-new from the wheels up, and designed to reinforce SEAT’s position as a leader in the supermini sector, the bigger, better new Ibiza five-door has a range of ‘big car’ features to match its sharp styling.

The work of renowned ex-Lamborghini stylist Luc Donckerwolke, the new car offers a variety of class-leading options such as the availability of a new seven-speed DSG automatic/sequential manual gearbox, Hill Hold Assist, front fog lights with side illumination (cornering) function and combined AUX-IN/USB connectivity for all manner of music devices.

Longer than the current model – the new Ibiza breasts the tape at 4.05 m, versus the existing car’s 3.97 m – it’s markedly more capacious, too, with improved rear seat legroom and a significantly larger and more practical boot space which, at 292 litres with rear seats in place, is comfortably the largest in the supermini class.

Sitting on a new version of the renowned Ibiza ‘Agile Chassis’, with wider front and rear tracks (30 mm and 33 mm respectively) the new car looks and feels even more ‘planted’, and delivers both a composed ride and class-leading, sporty handling.

Debuting with a range of potent, proven powerplants, the Ibiza five-door promises both strong performance and outstanding economy. Beneath the bonnet, this front-wheel drive motor will initially offer three petrol engine options: either a characterful 1.2-litre three cylinder 70 PS; flexible 1.4-litre 85 PS four cylinder or sporty 1.6-litre four cylinder 102 PS.

All three come mated as standard to a sweet-shifting five-speed manual gearbox, and all have undergone engineering modifications to ensure emissions fall comfortably below 160 g/km.

SEAT’s success in offering sporty yet frugal diesel cars naturally means a raft of sophisticated direct-injection TDI Ibiza five-doors will debut in due course, too.

Safety and security have both been key considerations in the development of the new car, with the likes of new head and thorax-focused front side airbags, and the extensive availability of ESP and TCS.

Welcoming the unveiling of the new car, Head of SEAT UK Peter Wyhinny said: ‘The debut of the spectacular new Ibiza is the clearest sign yet that SEAT is serious about putting enviable quality and state-of-the-art technology alongside sporting ‘auto emoción’ as the cornerstones of the Brand.

‘With the debut of this distinctive and clearly design-led five-door we are embarking on a major development of the SEAT range, with plenty more to come in the months ahead!’

NEW AURIS SR
Following the launch of the flagship Auris SR180, Toyota is introducing further sporting style to the range with new SR models powered by the 1.6 Dual VVT-i petrol and 2.0 D-4D 130 diesel engines. With great looks, generous specifications and competitive pricing, they are set to appeal to an even wider customer base.

The SR grade moves Auris right to the heart of the “mild sports” market, a fast growing niche that already accounts for more than one third of UK new car sales in the C-segment.

The new versions do more than just look good, benefiting from lowered sports suspension and riding on 17-inch alloy wheels, both from Toyota Motorsport. Other stand-out features provided as standard include a Toyota Motorsport rear spoiler and dark-tinted privacy glass – items shared with the SR180.

They also come equipped with nine airbags, climate control air conditioning, leather-trimmed steering wheel with audio controls, front fog lamps, six-speaker sound system and body colour-matched door handles and mirrors.

The SR is on sale now, in three and five-door body styles priced from £14,495. That represents excellent value to the customer, who gains an additional £1,495 of equipment and styling features at a price that is just £690 greater than that of the equivalent T3 model.

REVISED AURIS TR
The coolest note struck this spring is the introduction of automatic dual zone air conditioning on the Auris TR. The touch-of-a-dial control of left and right-side cabin temperatures tops the bill in a series of new features for the TR grade.

The new look includes a set of lean and smart five-spoke 16-inch alloy wheels, distinctive blue interior seat trim and chrome rear trim detailing. Like the new SR (above), the specification also includes nine airbags, front fog lamps, leather-trimmed steering wheel with audio controls, six-speaker sound system and body colour-matched door handles and mirrors. In spite of their superior specification, TR models cost £310 less than equivalent T3 models, giving total customer value of more than £655.

The TR is available now with 1.4 and 1.6 VVT-i petrol and 2.0 D-4D 130 diesel engines. Optional MultiMode transmission is available with the 1.6 unit.

Building on the remarkable abilities and image of the HUMMER H1 and H2, the midsized H3 is the most accessible HUMMER ever. The H3 was designed in response to global demand for a luxurious, everyday vehicle that offered the legendary HUMMER design and unparalleled off-road performance in a more useable and urban-friendly form.

Consequently H3 packs authentic HUMMER style and capability into more compact dimensions. Shorter, lower and narrower than the H2, the 2008 H3 is a similar length to a large family saloon and can comfortably navigate dense city traffic, yet still deliver HUMMER’s trademark all-terrain crawling and climbing capability out of town.

Developed for markets around the world and built in South Africa, the 2008 HUMMER H3’s iconic design continues to make it one of the most easily recognizable vehicles on the road. The signature seven-slot louvered front grille, flat windscreen and rectangular side windows, the profile’s low glass-to-metal ratio, giant 32-inch outside diameter Goodyear Wrangler tyres and externally carried spare wheel – are all classic HUMMER design cues.

H3 is the first HUMMER ever to offer the choice of a manual or automatic transmission. A smooth-shifting five-speed manual is standard, while GM’s famed Hydra-Matic 4L60 electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission is an option.

In the UK the 2008 HUMMER H3 is available as a three model range of right-hand drive vehicles, each with a choice of manual or automatic transmission. The H3 SE is priced from £26,495 (on-the-road), the H3 Luxury from £31,495 and the H3 Adventure from £30,495. A choice of nine exterior and five interior colours is offered.

Although the H3 is less than 5-metres long (overall length is 4782 mm) its long wheelbase (2841 mm) and broad track (1645/1665 front/rear) place a wheel-at-each corner for maximum stability, on- and off-road. The H3’s more compact size provides manoeuvrability advantages, such as an 11.3-metre turning circle.

The global version of the HUMMER H3 for all markets outside of North America is assembled at GM’s state-of-the-art Struandale Assembly Facility in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The facility benefited from a US$100-million refurbishment in 2006 and has been described as one of the most important milestones in the history of GM.

The simple, bold and aggressive KOUP exterior is complemented by its realistic, practical and sleek four-seat interior design. ‘The Kia KOUP concept represents the future of the Kia brand and its dynamic vehicles that embody our core philosophies,’ said Tom Kearns, chief designer of Kia Motors America. ‘Kia is currently designing cars to appeal to driving enthusiasts who want stylish looks and advanced technology. We believe KOUP delivers that strong appeal.’

KOUP combines balanced proportions and fluid design. From the purposeful upper grille to the high-tech headlamps, the front-end’s form gives the vehicle a bold and aggressive stance. An uncluttered yet dynamic wedge-shaped profile stems from carbon fibre and black-chrome LED headlamps. The short overhangs and a wide stance endorse its well-balanced and responsive character.

One element of the KOUP design which is easy to miss at first glance is the panoramic glass roof with two panels extending from front to rear windscreens, appearing as two parallel pieces of glass – similar to a fighter jet cockpit. Segregating the glass panels, an interior mood light runs the full length of the roof.

To underline the performance-inspired sporty elegance of KOUP, carbon fibre detailing appears throughout the concept. The chin spoiler, headlamp cowling, door mirrors, rear bumper insert and rear diffuser all feature the lightweight material. The 19-inch chrome wheels also feature carbon fibre inserts. Their open-faced design provides extra brake cooling and a great view of the large Brembo brake callipers and cross-drilled brake discs.

KOUP features a practical interior design which integrates high-style materials including rich and supple seat fabrics in concrete and black colour trims. The concept’s interior houses four full size seats which are finished in Ultrasuede whilst the floor is trimmed completely in Neoprene. More race-inspired carbon fibre accents appear around the interior.

High-tech interior details include a convenient smart key with push button start and a six-speed sequential transmission with steering column-mounted gear-shift paddles. The in-car ‘infotainment’ system features a substantial eight speaker system, including a pair of large rear parcel shelf speakers which are matched to the Kia ‘juke box’ providing the ultimate music flexibility on the move. A built-in Bluetooth-enabled navigation system with Map On Demand (MOD) includes a number of telematics services.

Power is supplied to the front wheel drive chassis by a 2.0-litre Theta II turbocharged engine producing 290 bhp using GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) technology and a twin scroll turbocharger. By injecting fuel directly into the cylinders under high pressure, using the Kia GDI system, the intake charge is cooled and combustion is improved. This type of combustion results in excellent fuel economy and low emissions whilst providing excellent torque – KOUP produces 289 lb ft of torque from 2000 rpm, sustained to 4000 rpm. The lower front grille openings on the concept help deliver additional cooling air to the engine for extra power.

Dynamic handling comes from fully independent suspension combined with Continuous Damping Control (CDC). This delivers quick responses to road changes and driver inputs for maximised grip during spirited driving. Speed sensitive power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering adds to the dynamic drive whilst the 245/40 ZR19-inch tyres complete the KOUP’s impressive chassis package.

The KOUP concept features all of the standard safety features offered on many of Kia’s production vehicle line-up including six airbags, a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), traction control and CDC. Adaptive front lighting and cruise control add further to the KOUP’s advanced safety technology.

The KOUP concept underlines Kia’s desire to produce cars which will provide an exciting driving experience partnered with a practical and desirable design, laden with new technology. KOUP has shown that Kia is living up to its slogan ‘The Power to Surprise’.

These are the first pictures of Hyundai’s Genesis Coupe, a purpose-built rear-wheel drive sports coupe that promises to take the Korean manufacturer into supercar territory for the first time. Revealed at the New York International Auto Show, the stunningly-styled two door coupe will be powered by a choice of two performance-focused petrol engines – a 223PS 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder and a range-topping all-aluminium 310PS, DOHC 3.8-litre V6. The Genesis Coupe is scheduled to join the Hyundai lineup in South Korea and North America early in 2009, and may come to Britain in limited numbers later next year.

The Genesis Coupe uses the same flexible rear-wheel drive architecture originally developed for the Genesis sports saloon, which was revealed earlier this year. It uses a MacPherson strut dual-link front suspension and a five-link rear suspension setup. Both engines are mated to a standard six-speed manual transmission with an auto option and have 18-inch alloys or optional 19-inch wheels.

“We think our entry-level Genesis Coupe 2.0t, with its unique combination of rear-wheel drive and four-cylinder turbo power, offers an intriguing alternative to existing front-wheel drive sports coupes,” said John Krafcik, vice president, product development and strategic planning, Hyundai Motor America. “The 3.8-litre version takes things to an even higher level, rivalling the capability of premium coupes.”

In keeping with its mission to be the most exciting, affordable sports coupe on the road, the Genesis Coupe boasts a cockpit designed to enhance the driving experience. An information display screen features an outside temperature reading, audio system information and settings for the climate control. Analogue gauges include a large speedometer and tachometer positioned so the driver can immediately access critical driving information. The instrument cluster features Hyundai’s signature blue gauge illumination. Music lovers will welcome the inclusion of standard auxiliary input jacks to accommodate and charge audio devices such as iPods. Among the other refinements are an Infinity audio system, sport bucket seats and two-stage heated front seats. Genesis Coupe also offers the convenience of a proximity key and push button starter.

Tony Whitehorn, managing director of Hyundai UK said: “the Genesis Coupe is further proof that Hyundai’s engineers are capable of producing cars which can match or better anything produced in Japan, Europe or America. We would love to be able to bring this amazing car to the UK, and are keeping a close eye on public reaction to see if there is demand from British driving enthusiasts.”
