By an overwhelming majority the most exciting car to be launched in 2008 is the Ford Verve Concept according to What Car? and Eve Cars online readers.

In announcing the What Car? Reader Award, Steve Fowler, Group Editor of What Car? said: “The striking looks of Ford’s Verve Concept have clearly struck a chord with whatcar.com and evecars.com users. It received twice as many votes as the runner up, the new VW Scirocco, which bodes extremely well for the Fiesta replacement which will follow the Verve’s style lead when it’s launched later this year.”

Mitsubishi Motors have premiered the Mitsubishi Concept-RA to the world at the 2008 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS or the Detroit Motor Show)[1].

Mitsubishi Concept-RA fuses a passion for dynamic, exciting driving with a heightened sensitivity for the environment thanks to clean, efficient high performance diesel power.

Mitsubishi Concept-RA shows that thrilling performance and environmental responsibility need not be mutually exclusive concepts. This coupe concept features the S-AWC vehicle dynamics control system driveline and the Twin Clutch SST (Sports Shift Transmission) used in the all-new Lancer Evolution X[2], and is powered by a new high-output, high-efficiency clean diesel engine.

CHRYSLER REVEALS THREE NEW GREEN CONCEPTS

Chrysler has unveiled three brand new concept vehicles – each featuring a different advanced alternative fuel system – at the Detroit Auto Show today.

The Chrysler ecoVoyager Concept, Jeep Renegade Concept and Dodge ZEO Concept take advantage of the best new technologies and couple them with the room, comfort, speed and style customers want from their family vehicle.

Simon Elliott, Managing Director of Chrysler UK, said: “Providing exceptional fuel economy and reducing emissions is part of Chrysler’s environmental commitment. In fact, we have already seen some of the benefits of our green approach in the UK with the launch of so many Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge models with fuel-efficient diesel engines in the last few years.

AUDI R8 SPORTS CAR GOES DIESEL IN DETROIT

Fresh from ripping up the Le Mans racing rulebook with the diesel-powered R10 TDI, Audi is exploring the possibility of breaking yet another mould with a road-going TDI super car based on the R8. The R8 V12 TDI Concept makes its debut at this month’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit, replacing the production sports car’s mid-mounted petrol FSI V8 with a 12-cylinder TDI endowed with an incredible 1,000Nm of torque.

First seen in the forthcoming Q7 V12 TDI SUV, the 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 with 500PS is similar in basic concept to the R10 TDI’s 5.5-litre race engine, and delivers its colossal 1,000Nm output from just 1,750rpm, guaranteeing the effortless delivery of a 4.2-second 0-62mph acceleration time and a top speed in excess of 186mph.

Saabs future style previewed on crossover concept

Saab’s future style made its debut at Detroit on the new 9-4X luxury sports-utility vehicle. The VW Touareg-sized 4×4 features styling cues inside and out that will feature on all future Saabs, said Mark Adams, GM Europe’s vice-president of design.

External features include a new, bolder treatment of the Saab grille and wraparound front and rear windscreens, while inside the driver’s cockpit area is bolder, with a less vertical dashboard than on current Saab models. Interior trim colours feature distinctly “Scandinavian” colours. Adams acknowledges that rival Volvo is also taking a similar approach, but believes that both brands will benefit.

The engineers and designers at Lexus continue to use their groundbreaking LF-A premium sports car concept as a medium for expressing their ideas about what a high-performance sporting vehicle not only can be, but should be. In this latest expression of the LF-A, they have removed the car’s top to create a high-performance roadster.

The LF-A Roadster is based on the sturdy yet lightweight carbon-fibre and aluminium body used for the LF-A coupe, which helps maintain the structure’s strength and rigidity even without a top.

The Mazda Furai concept car which makes its world premiere at the NAIAS in Detroit, Michigan, today (Sunday), celebrates 40 years of Mazda’s rotary engine and international motorsports heritage. The raciest interpretation of NAGARE design language to-date, Furai is the latest car in Mazda’s award-winning and highly acclaimed series of concept cars. Nagare (pronounced ‘na-ga-reh’), is the Japanese for ‘flow’ and the ‘embodiment of motion’.

Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc., returns to its compact pickup truck roots with its latest concept vehicle A-BAT. The environmentally advanced A-BAT provides modern versatility, roominess and style in a compact pickup architecture. The A-BAT will be on display at the Toyota exhibit in Detroit at the 2008 North American International Auto Show beginning Monday, Jan. 14.

“Driving from beyond the suburbs to the city is a way of life for many people,” said Kevin Hunter, president, Calty Design Research, Inc. “We’ve taken Toyota’s truck heritage to a different level by envisioning a vehicle capable of manoeuvring the suburbs as well as dirt roads. This compact truck is as comfortable for long commutes as it is for road trips. It can accommodate outdoor toys and home improvement supplies. Plus, customers benefit from the hybrid powertrain’s low emissions and fuel economy.”
